7 Tips For Choosing the Best Baby Monitor

Choosing a baby monitor for your child can be a tough decision when there are so many different choices and features among the different monitors. We have collected some tips that may be able to help you with this important decision.

1. How far away is your child’s room from your own? If the child’s room is rather close than you will probably be able to hear him or her without a monitor. If you would like to have one to be on the safe side it would likely be good enough to buy one of the cheaper models.

2. Is your baby difficult to soothe? Some of the higher end monitor models come with the ability to play music for your child without even entering the room. This way if your child starts to fuss you can try to play him or her a calming melody to soothe them back to sleep.

3. Is video an important feature to your decision? Some parents feel better being able to see the child as well as hear them. Video monitors would be a good choice in this case and they are becoming increasingly affordable. Choices available include black and white, color and even flat screens.

4. Are you scared of SIDS and want extra protection? Children are unfortunately at risk for SIDS until they are 6 months old. SIDS preventions include placing your child on their back to go to sleep. Movement monitors have hit the markets that sound an alarm after your child has not moved for a certain number of seconds. These monitors are very sensitive and can detect that your child is still breathing.

5. Would you like monitor portability? Most monitors nowadays come with a handheld parent until that can be charged at a base by your bed, but can also be carried around to other rooms so that you can still listen to your baby.

6. Lights? Some monitors can also be crossed with baby toys. Some models including those by Fisher Price will have light up options to keep the child entertained.

7. Worried about interference? Sometimes the cheaper monitor models will operate on the same frequency as sounds from the outside. This means that you run the risk of hearing other things on your monitor as well as other people from the outside having the ability to hear your child. Higher end model monitors will operate on their own frequency and minimize these risks.
